Oh the Drama!

July 1st, 2010

I had been meaning to start drama classes again for a while – despite my boyfriend cheekily telling me that I certainly don’t need any lessons in drama! Having started to take on more acting roles I decided to brush my fears aside (or at least beat them off temporarily) and immerse myself in a world of thespians – ooh slightly grammatically different from usual setting!

Of course that nagging voice in my head told me a 100 different reasons why it would be better to go next week, next month…..or even next year but I told her not to be such a party pooper and blasted her out with my ipod and ear phones!

The Drama group I attended is ran by two extremely knowledgeable ladies who were both very welcoming and good at putting people at ease quickly. I was one of 3 newbies who was welcomed into the group by the other students who are an eclectic mix of fascinating and vibrant individuals who are quick to create a lively atmosphere, and relaxed us noobs with wise cracks and gags!

The tutor warmed us up with some exercises which started off with some solitary miming – such as visiting a zoo or playing with a hose. I must admit I felt a bit batty but was surprised at how quickly I could visualise the things which she suggested and could see everyone else having fun at it!

Next we were to team up and improvise a situation off the cuff with a random subject we were given. At first this seemed a daunting prospect but the students soon inspired me to get my head around talking and acting out surreal scenarios and I began to enjoy myself. For anyone who has never encountered such a thing the best way to describe it would be to imagine speed dating in an asylum – a few short minutes talking and acting out nonsense with a complete stranger before moving on to the next person! What can I say – it allowed me to embrace my nutty side and I found it to be both liberating and confidence boosting! I’d recommend it to anyone who is socially shy whether you have an interest in acting or not. Your comfort barriers will be pushed but if you run with it there is a lot of fun to be had! Later we were teamed up and I worked with a lad who did an hilarious rendition of a slightly loopy priest!

The group are currently working on a modernised version of Romeo and Juliet which is full to the rafters with comic moments as well as tragedy. Now my homework is to work on developing a cockney accent for the play – now I better go put my mind to the task so it doesn’t all go Pete Tong me sparrow!

My debut movie role in Grand Caymen

July 1st, 2010

As the aircraft doors opened I was hit by the a blast of warm air and the golden light beating down from the sky…..but don’t worry this story isn’t about to get hairy – I had just landed in Grand Caymen!

Grand Caymen is an island off the coast of Mexico (and South of Miami) and I had flown out to feature in a zombie movie called “Zombie Driftwood.”

Instantly I forgot the intense 10 hours of discomfort I had endured on the flight as I drank in my surroundings. A hectic schedule was about to begin and my role in it was to play Marianne, an ex patriot who parties wildly with her comrades before becoming one of the walking dead! It was a great honour to play this character who doesn’t succumb to the usual stereotypes of zombie horror and instead transforms into a one track minded creature who knows what she wants and gets it!

The days on set were long and arduous in the baking heat but ended with a sense of learning and development.

Whilst on the island I also had the joy of experiencing a visit to stingray city, a long stretch of calm and crystal clear waters that were home to tame stingrays which gracefully swim past your legs with ease! I wasn’t quite ready to hold one but I did stroke a stingray who seemed to lap up the attention!

During this day off I also experienced snorkelling in the glorious depths of the warm blue ocean where I encountered many kinds of exotic angelfish, starfish and even two lobsters mating! I felt truly privileged to swim amongst such beautiful creatures in their natural environment.

The caves are also worth a trip if geology interests you and are also home to colonies of rare bats! I am told that there are plans to commercialise the caves and build a tourist attraction around them. I see this as a great shame as there are only so many caves that are the right temperature for the bats and so it is likely this may cause many to perish. Catch it whilst you can before it becomes over commercialised!

In fact Grand Caymen is very underdeveloped due to the devastating hurricanes that rape the island every 4 or 5 years, but there is a great deal of natural beauty to be found across the island and many will find great pleasure in escaping to an island that is not subjected to mass commericialism.

I am also told that the local rum is heavenly and I found the cuisine fresh and mouth watering – but if the film “Free Willy” made you cry be wary of ordering “Mahi Mahi” which is actually Dolphin! And if you are prone to mosquito bites you will need to cover yourself from head to toe in repellent. I got bitten in places that would make your grandmother blush and my arm swelled up with golf ball sized lumps on the first day! Thank heavens the make up artist Lucy Darkness was a whizz with a make up brush and concealer!

So what else did I get up to on set? Well I can tell you there is some on screen snogging but you’ll have to wait until September and watch the movie to find out anymore! ;)

Zombie Driftwood behind the scenes

I’ve just spent 13 days in the glorious Island of Grand Caymen acting in a zombie movie which will hopefully hit the cinemas later this year. Here are a couple of photo’s behind the scenes by Lucy Darkness and photographer Guido.

Back from Turkey and feeling tanned, toned and inspired!

June 2nd, 2010

A break away does you good sometimes, even if it is a working holiday.

I’ve just returned from the picturesque resort of Alanya in Turkey, which we visited to get some good locational shots and unwind.  This was my 6th visit to Turkey having before visted Marmaris, Bodrum, Dalyan Valley and Istanbul, and Alanya certainly has the most to offer. It also has the added bonus of lacking in boozy brits abroad and is frequented more by Europeans, making for a more relaxing hassle free break.

As we don’t drink alcohol  and regard cheesy music with somewhat contempt, we were not particularly interested in tourist bars offering free toxic shots and instead turned our attention towards exploring the resort and finding out what activities were on offer. An extensive menu of high adrenaline sporting activities were available right down to the more sedentary excursions.

Our first trip on the boat was a disaster. Not only did the tout tell us of many wonders (that were to be totally non existent) but upon boarding the boat the crew confiscated everyone’s water so they would sell more drinks! This instantly created a bad vibe and then to top things off the weather took a turn for the worse and everyone was shivering. When the crew brought a dancer out everyone was downright peed off so this was met with little success!

Luckily we had an amazing experience on the white water rafting trip. There were 8 of us rowing in each boat and everyone was quite hyper and excited which made for a good atmosphere, not to mention the stunning landscapes and scenery we passed; rolling hills and peaks, little grazing goats and beautifully scenic waterfalls. All this combined with the buzz of battling the rapids and spinning round in white water made this a memorable trip for all the right reasons.

We also went diving…or at least JJ did. I wasn’t so keen on diving last time as the sheer weight of all the equipment made me gasp for breathe, so then having to do this underwater just made me hyperventilate! So I went on the boat as a “spectator” and took my snorkelling gear into the ocean! The water was crystal clear and I could see dozens of shoals of fish flitting in and out of the coral! Thankfully the weather was also spectacular so plenty of (safe) sun worshipping was enjoyed by all.

JJ went diving minus a wetsuit (nutter!) to stay cool and came back with tales of underwater bottle spinning games and rock throwing competitions (apparently it doesn’t hurt underwater but I am in no rush to put this to the test! He claims the instructor initiated it but I don’t believe that for a minute!

On the last day we took a pedalo out on the sea so we could enjoy the coastline and soak up some rays. I’ll hope you enjoy the pics below. I also have a load on my I-phone was I will download and add to this thread.

So what now…?I have some tough things to deal with next week which have been hanging over my head for well over a year now, so at least it will be able to reach some kind of conclusion. Finally I should be able to get my life back on track and fully immerse myself in career, family and friends.

I am also working on an idea for a book so I hope to have some time to dedicate to that this year as well as taking on more acting roles.

Whatever you have planned for the summer make sure you enjoy it, and treat people as you expect to be treated. Life is to short to let the world pass you by.

Ta ta for now

Hollywood here I come….

April 29th, 2010

….ok so I may have exaggerated a little but I did get the opportunity to appear in a film noire this week that is being produced by student directors at Birmingham university.  I’m starting to build a CV of non adult projects and have found that I have a passion for acting! My showreel should be available soon.

This week I have also been busy making custom video’s but managed to find some time to bounce away on the wii fit  – the extreme sports game has had me ducking, jumping and diving all over the place! When I did the bodytest I gasped when I saw I had gone up 1 pound…then I felt a tail tickle my leg and realised my cat Piskie had come and mad herself comfortable on the balance board – phew!

I have also been keeping up with my favourite show – ‘Supernatural’ and now looking for more sci-fi now I have finished Dollhouse and Star Trek Voyager.  I am also loving the new Dr Who which has exceeded my expectations! Being a massive fan of David Tennant (at least as the Doctor) I initially  wondered how any other actor would fill his boots but have been pleasantly surprised with Matt Smith’s acting abilities and moments of comic genius…..

The Doctor: “Didn’t anyone ever tell you, there’s one thing you never put in a trap if you’re smart? If you value your continued existence. If you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there’s one thing you never ever put in a trap.”
Bob/Weeping Angel: “And what would be that be, sir?”
The Doctor: “Me!”

His character developed considerably in the last weeping angels episode and I look forward to more moments of hilarity from the new Doctor and his lovely assistant Ms Pond.

In fact the only let down was the new breed of daleks that resemble vacuum cleaners and are about as scary as a small weeping child or a yorkshire terrier with a sore toe! I did however enjoy the Doctor’s improvisation with a jammy dodger biscuit  which he bluffed was a remote to an explosive device that he would use to rid the world of daleks once and for all!

What do you think of the new Doctor Who? Your comments on this subject are welcome.
